We have all missed that feeling of the warm sunshine on our faces. So, what better way to celebrate spring than to get your hands dirty and starting a vegetable garden in your backyard.

Gardening is an excellent way to have fun in the outdoors, and it’s rewarding too as you can visibly track your progress each week. You can also save a money at the grocery store too. In no time you will be able to add fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and basil to your favorite recipes. In order to help you build a garden that stands the test of time and that will flourish, we have put together a list of tips for beginners or those thinking about starting their own vegetable garden.

Vegetable Garden Essentials

Make sure to stock up on the tools you need before you start planting. You will also want to find the designated area you want to plant. Here is a list of things you want to get before starting a vegetable garden:

  • Spade
  • Wheelbarrow / Bucket
  • Hoe / Hand-Weeding Tool
  • Trellis
  • Hose
  • Gloves

You will also want to get soil. We recommend our Miracle-Gro Potting Mix. Once you have the materials and soil, all you need are the seeds. You can buy everything you need at the front entrance of Cape Ace.

Planning & Planting

It is important to make a plan of what you are going to plant and where they will go. Some plants do better by starting the seeds inside. Then when they start to sprout, planting them in your garden. You also want to give plenty of space for the vegetables to grow. We recommend noting with a stick or rock, where what plant is which, as it can be hard to tell at first where you put things. Make sure the garden has plenty of sun for most of the day.

Consider a Fence

In Cape, we have a lot of wildlife around. Deer, foxes, rabbits – not to mention our own pets. It might be best to build a low fence to keep your nosy pup out or little ones. If you have deer in your backyard or no privacy fence around your yard, it might be better to build a larger fence to keep out animals. You can also get creative and paint the wall to add some color and beauty to your backyard.

Starting a vegetable garden might be something you have been wanting to do for a long time, and it is simple to start. Start this spring and by summertime, you will have a plethora of tasty, home-grown vegetables to feed the whole family.
